Build Digital hosted a webinar to announce the launch of a Delivery Team Information Management tool on Thursday, January 30th 2025.

Build Digital Project Lead Robert Moore demonstrated how the new Build Digital Delivery Team Information Management (IM) Plan can be effectively implemented on projects. The Delivery Team IM Plan has been developed in accordance with ISO 19650-2 and offers a comprehensive template for the Pre-appointment BIM Execution Plan (BEP), which can be developed into the project’s BIM Execution Plan (BEP). It has also been designed to meet the requirements of Capital Works Management Framework (CWMF) projects under the Irish BIM Mandate.

What was discussed:
▪️ How to implement the Delivery Team IM Plan on real-world projects.
▪️ The plan's role in supporting the Irish BIM Mandate through better information management.
▪️ How it complements existing templates available on the Build Digital Exchange, including: Organisational Information Management (IM) Plan and Appointing Party Information Management (IM) Plan.

Denise Tuffy, Director of Specialist Consulting in the Construction Industry Federation hosted the event and facilitated a Q&A session. Find the questions raised and answers below:

Q&A Session

Will the new BIM Requirements cover the carbon input into a construction project?

ISO 19650 covers information requirements. Carbon input is an information requirement. We will be preparing a worked example of an EIR template with CWMF/safety file/sustainability information requirements.

Have there been any pilot projects using this template, and what were the key lessons learned? And how does this plan help mitigate common issues in information management, such as version control or miscommunication between stakeholders?

Similar plans have been used on projects to simplify the process. The key lesson was having current information (or links to information) in one place helped with eliminating version control or miscommunication issues.

Is there an example of completed output documents for a project with BEP / EIR using the information management plan/naming standard etc.?

There are no plans to prepare a sample project, but Build Digital will be preparing a worked example of an EIR template with CWMF/safety file/sustainability information requirements. The best example is one you do yourself; it is recommended to use the last completed project in your organisation and apply the new templates and naming standards. This will act as proof of concept and is less risky than rolling out new ways of working on a live project.

Is there any particular CAD standards that you recommend for state agencies to be included in EIR?

The information standards and procedures should be tailored to your organisations. But here is a start for naming:

Can you re-cap on what documents should or could be issued as part of the Tender process?

As a client, for a tender use:

Ask the tenderers to respond using:

Will the new BIM Requirements cover the carbon input into a construction project?

ISO 19650 covers information requirements. Carbon input is an information requirement. We will be preparing a worked example of an EIR template with CWMF/safety file/sustainability information requirements.

Could a link be sent to download these templates online?

These templates and loads more are available on The Build Digital Exchange.

What will the likely minimum requirement be to establish the competence of the information manager e.g. Will a BIM coordinator’s master’s degree or similar be required?

The standard does not set a minimum requirement. This should be set in the tender for a project and the requirement of the organisation will set it for the organisation i.e. a small SME minor might not need a master-qualified information management manager.

How do we show employers/clients the cost benefit of using IM standards that the requirements are coming from a top-down approach?

The easiest approach is to look at cost events in construction. They are usually caused by poor information. You should compare cost events in projects that don’t have information management to ones that do. There is a health warning that you also need to focus on removing cost events when creating the information, as poor information can also be produced in information management if due care is not taken.

Is there a future plan for workshops to be organised so mock projects could show templates working in real-life scenarios?

There are no plans to prepare a sample project, but we will be preparing a worked example of an EIR template with CWMF/safety file/sustainability information requirements. We will be assisting the Local Authorities in implementing this on their projects, but this engagement will be led by the Build digital cohort groups (National infrastructure, Local infrastructure, and Local housing) that we are forming now.
